Physical Anthropology: The Mystery of the Bones

The Mystery of the Bones

Archaeologists digging near the ancient Nubian city of Kerma have unearthed a nearly complete skeleton. They are excited to find out more about who was buried there. Skeletons can tell us much about the lives of ancient peoples, including whether they were male or female, approximately how old they were and about how tall they were. The excavation team’s physical anthropologist, Dr. Dawn Mulhern, has been called away, but the team wants to know as much as they can about the skeleton before she returns.

Now it’s up to you! Using the tools of a physical anthropologist, can you figure out what there is to know about this ancient skeleton? In the interactive version there are simulations of actual tools used that are impossible to completely replicate in this version of the activity. You will be provided with all of the data gathered in this activity to help understand what can be learned about this skeleton.
