Physical Anthropology: The Mystery of the Bones

Final Report

Dr Mulhern’s report is as follows: Based on the evidence from the skull and pelvis, I believe this individual was female. The rough surfaces and sharp rims of the public symphysis indicate to me that the individual was over 50 years old. Arthritis found in the spine provides support for this age estimation because arthritis is a disease often seen in older people. Because I believe this individual was female, I estimate that her height was about 158 cm or 5 feet, 2 inches. This skeleton had two healed fractures in her right arm. The right humerus has a fracture with a callus (area of thickening of the bone), indicating that some, but not all, healing has taken place. An older, well-healed parry fracture of the right ulna may suggest a violent incident, because the parry fracture would indicate that a person was trying to defend herself by shielding her body or face with her arm.
