DESCRIPTION: In the following video, computer animation shows a columned, entrance-chamber built at the base of a mountain. Later, researchers use survey and GPS equipment in a desert. A researcher walks through a grid of ropes carrying a meter low to the ground.

KENDALL: Taharqa, to honor the goddess Mut, who was the wife of god Amon. And it's partly built outside the mountain and the inner rooms are cut into the mountain. If you come into the temple, into the innermost sanctuary, you find scenes of the king, honoring all the gods of Nubia, and all the gods of Egypt on the north wall.

NARRATOR: New technologies assist archaeologists, not only in visualizing historical sites, but also in locating objects in buildings. One technique, magnetometry, allows scientists to locate objects hidden beneath the earth, using magnetic waves. Scientists pass a device over an area that identifies differences in the magnetic fields in the earth. It is useful in locating objects like pottery, because its magnetic properties differ from the natural environment.
