Object of the Week
Gold, hinged circular band
The object was found in the tomb of one of the minor queens of Piankhy (ca. 747-712 BCE). Her burial was thoroughly plundered, but this object had fallen between stone blocks on which her coffin had been placed and thus escaped the ancient tomb robbers. It is made of two crescent-shaped bands of gold joined with hinges. Pins allow the pieces to be separated. On the larger piece is a representation of a kneeling winged goddess with a sun disk on her head, symbolizing protection for the owner, and on the smaller piece is a scarab, symbolizing the rising sun, a symbol of rebirth, renewed life, and resurrection after death.
