Intersecting Community, Culture, Science
digNubia: Exploring the Science of Archaeology
Through the use of ancient Nubia as a context for informal education
activities, digNubia serves to provide opportunities for audiences to make
connections between the sciences and the humanities and to explore the
impact of scientific analysis on the interpretation of history and culture.
Through the use of an interactive activity and resource centered web site,
a traveling exhibition, documentary film, and resource materials, digNubia
seeks to explore the interdisciplinary field of archaeology as it draws on
multiple fields in science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SMET).
The purpose of these modes of inquiry are to strengthen SMET literacy
in underserved communities by delivering materials and activities that meet
the demands of national standards; to strengthen the capacity of community
based educators and organizations to create additional opportunities for
SMET education; and to spark an interest in young people in career
opportunities in the sciences explored throughout the project. In
addition, we seek to use an African historical and cultural context to
resonate with African-American audiences and provide new ways to reach
young people in African-American communities.
